Nats plan to give Bryce Harper big league at-bats this spring

There apparently won't be any breaks for the Bryce Harper hype train as it makes its way toward the major leagues.

Washington Nationals manager Jim Riggleman said on Monday that the team plans to give 2010's No. 1 draft pick some big league at-bats during spring training.

From the Associated Press:

Riggleman said Monday that Harper will be in major league camp this spring. If he's not getting to hit enough, then the Nationals will send him down to the minor league camp.

Harper was the No. 1 pick in last summer's draft. He excelled in the Arizona Fall League, batting .343 with six extra-base hits in nine games.

Say this for the Nationals: Even though they've been one of the worst franchises in baseball the past few years, they know how to make headlines with talent that hasn't even reached the majors. Last March, Stephen Strasburg joined Cincinnati's Aroldis Chapman as the prospects everyone wanted to see pitch during spring training. Next March, it'll be Harper getting the star treatment as he gets a few whacks against next-level pitching.

But considering that Harper only has a few games in the Arizona Fall League under his belt and hasn't yet played in the minor leagues, I think we can be forgiven for thinking this is merely a good way for the Nats to sell a few extra tickets and get some positive press in Melbourne, Fla., next spring. No matter how he does, Harper will likely still start the season in Single-A.
