Here are your Puck Headlines: a glorious collection of news and views collected from the greatest blogosphere in sports and the few, the proud, the mainstream hockey media.
• Quentin Tarantino at a New York Rangers game last week. Was totally into the game before he noticed a tall blonde had slipped her shoes off three rows in front of him. Hopefully this is a scouting mission for a remake of "The Cutting Edge" with Tim Roth and Amanda Plummer.
• Antti Niemi vs. the Detroit Red Wings tonight. Why, San Jose Sharks coach Todd McLellan? "We had Niity in San Jose (against Detroit) less than a week ago and we didn't have success with him. Nemo on the other hand has played in this building before. He understands the boards and the glass, knows the players a little bit better and has had some success here. It's as simple as that." Nice Velvet Jones impersonation at the end there. [Working The Corners]
• Is Tony Tavares the new "interim" team president for the Dallas Stars? [Defending Big D]
• Scott Burnside on the NHL Board of Governors meetings and the Phoenix Coyotes ownership situation with Matthew Hulsizer: "Sources continue to tell ESPN.com that everything is on track for both sides of the deal -- new lease and purchase price -- to be settled by Christmas, but the league will be in position after Dec. 31 to begin negotiations to relocate the team if a deal isn't in place, so there is some urgency to get everything squared away before the end of the calendar year. The time line on a final deal, along with how he plans to right the long-listing franchise, is sure to come up during Hulsizer's meeting with the executive committee on Monday." [ESPN]
• Hulsizer met the media after his BOG appearance: "I just had the interview with the executive committee. I think it went fairly well and I'm optimistic that we are going to get this thing done by the end of the (calendar) year." [NHL]
• Pittsburgh Penguins center Sidney Crosby, Buffalo Sabres goaltender Ryan Miller and Edmonton Oilers left wing Taylor Hall have been named the NHL 'Three Stars' for the period ending Dec. 5. [NHL]
• Pittsburgh Sports and Mini-Ponies offers its take on that bizarre Sidney Crosby holiday card we had this morning. [PSAMP]
• From the Vanity Fair interview with Crosby, does he follow the Pittsburgh Steelers? "Of course-it's pretty hard not to be in Pittsburgh. From the day I got here, I instantly became a Steelers fan. Growing up in Canada, I didn't watch football much. Now I've been in Pittsburgh for five years, going on six. I've learned more and more about football and grown to like it more and more. I really enjoy watching the Steelers play and cheering them on. It's a lot of fun." [VF]
• The pun-writers on NHL.com must ... be ... stopped. [The Royal Half]
• The Philadelphia Flyers are asking for an extension of their Long-Term Injury exception on goalie Michael Leighton. From Broad Street Hockey: "Paul Holmgren announced this on a conference call with reporters Monday, meaning that he's probably pretty confident the NHL will approve the extension. Why go to the media with it if you're not confident?" BECAUSE THAT'S NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE. [BSH]
• What kind of whack-jobs attend a Pittsburgh Penguins game in Columbus dressed as Macho Man and Ric Flair? [Pensblog]
• Should the Washington Capitals formally protest their loss to the Dallas Stars last week, now that On Friday, coach Arturs Irbe told the Capitals Radio Network that Karlis Skrastins "admitted to him that he did in fact fall into Raycroft on his own. Normally, if a defenseman wipes out his own goalie, it's fair game and any pucks that cross the goal line would count"? [WTOP]
• The American Hockey League announced today that Lake Erie Monsters center Patrick Rissmiller has been named the Reebok/AHL Player of the Week for the period ending Dec. 5, 2010. Rissmiller recorded four goals and two assists for six points in two games for the Monsters. In a related story, we can now answer the question, "What the [expletive] happened to Patrick Rissmiller?" [AHL]
• Interesting little post: The winning percentage for all the Los Angeles Kings players. [JFTC]
• Also interesting: Checking on the Florida-born players in pro hockey. [Litter Box Cats]
• Spector on the New York Rangers' pursuit of Brad Richards of the Dallas Stars: "If the Stars fall out of the playoff race by February and their ownership situation hasn't been resolved, Richards will certainly be shopped. If they're still riding high in the standings, though, they'll probably hang onto him in hopes a playoff berth will improve the team's value to potential owners." [THN]
• Behind the scenes at Hockey Night in Canada: "8:08: Camera operators continue their diligent search for various players' parents. All appear to be at the hot dog stand." [Toronto Star]
• Saying goodbye to Guy Lafleur from NHL alumni games, and figuring out what happened to Flower Power: "Flower Power was a Gatorade knockoff that first appeared sometime in 1990-91 during Lafleur's final season with the Quebec Nordiques. You'll be forgiven if you can't recall its existence, as Flower Power was quickly relegated to the 2-for-99 cents cooler in most convenience stores. Flower Power's run as cheap alternative to Gatorade was short-lived, much like The Flower's tenure with the New York Rangers." [Houses of the Hockey]
• Here's Bill Guerin on NHL Live, talking retirement.
• Allan Maki of the Globe & Mail on Darryl Sutter and the Calgary Flames: "You could say it's time to get rid of the coach but what ails this squad runs a lot deeper than Brent Sutter. A lot higher, too. General manager Darryl Sutter has put this squad together in a haphazard manner. He has to pay the price for that. Move him out and slide assistant GM Jay Feaster onto the hot seat and allow him to shake things up, trade veterans for draft picks and prospects." [G&M]
• In what's being called a "salary-cap related move" due to injuries to Patrick Kane and Marian Hossa, the Blackhawks assigned forward Jeremy Morin to Rockford of the American Hockey League on Monday. [Chicago Tribune]
• Pretty much our favorite tidbit from the weekend: Alex Steen explains how the Vancouver Province's hubris gave the St. Louis Blues the motivation they needed to defeat the Vancouver Canucks. [Province]
• BLOGS! Catching up with "retired" hockey blogging original Jes Golbez. [From The Rink]
• This Tampa Bay Lightning blog about the team's goaltending situation is inspired lunacy, from the incredible title to the Garth Snow comedy. [Frozen Sheets]
• Could Doug Gilmour be in line for an NHL coaching job this season? [Slam]
• Check out the Up The Pucks podcast for punk rock and the New Jersey Devils. [UTP]
• Finally, making snowballs and shooting them with a hockey stick. Beer snowballs. Ketchup snowballs. And shooting them at Tim Horton's coffee mugs and a Heineken mini-keg. "Love" isn't a strong enough word for this video.
