Bethpage Black may get its wish of returning to the professional golf scene next year, but it appears it won't be in the capacity the course was hoping for.
After hosting one of the soggiest U.S. Opens in recent memory back in 2009, the course is rumored to be a target for the Barclays, an event that kicks off the FedEx Cup Playoffs.
As Doug Ferguson of the Associated Press reported, Barclays would like to have Bethpage Black host the 2012 event, and then hopefully join a rotation that would include Ridgewood and Plainfield, two historic New Jersey courses that appear to be cornestones of Barclay's rotation.
While most clubs would be excited about the prospect of hosting one of the biggest events on the PGA Tour, Bethpage seems to be after bigger and better tournaments, namely another major championship.
Soon after it closed the books on the 2009 U.S. Open, Bethpage began the process of trying to get back in the USGA's Open rotation. But the interest was met with a lukewarm reaction.
Mike Davis, the senior director of rules and competition for the USGA, all but shot down any chance of Bethpage hosting a U.S. Open in the near future: "I do know the Bethpage people have been looking at other events they could do. It's fair to say that at least what we have named to date (for the U.S. Open), and what we will name in the very near future, won't be Bethpage."
Hosting a tour event over a major championship may not be exactly what Bethpage is looking for, but it may be the course's only chance of brining professional golf back to the famed public course in the near future.
