At the beginning of the PGA Tour season, there were a handful of players on tour that you expected big things from in 2011.
Camilo Villegas was certainly one of them. Just 29 years old with rakish good looks, the Colombian was not only one of golf's promising stars -- he was also the poster boy for the fitness craze on tour.
While nothing is certain in this game, it almost seemed like a foregone conclusion that Villegas would be in contention to capture another title after winning three times in the last three years and only missing seven cuts. When you work as hard as he did last offseason -- he claimed he worked "more than I probably have in my last five, six seasons on tour" -- you expect to get results on the course.
But things didn't exactly start out the way Villegas hoped. In fact, the first four months of this year have been nothing short of a nightmare at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions -- an event that saw him get DQ'd by a TV viewer -- withdrawing from another event due to back problems, and three missed cuts in his first nine tournaments.
The early part of the season for Villegas has been a complete wash, but after a couple rounds at The Heritage, it looks like one of golf's rising stars could be showing signs of life. After firing a 5-under 66 in the opening round, his lowest of the season, he followed it up with a 3-under 68 to get in contention for the first time this year going into the weekend.
It'd be silly to proclaim he's rounding into form, but the fact Villegas has finally put a couple of solid rounds together for the first time this year is a good sign that should give him a renewed sense of confidence going forward. Hopefully it also gets him out of this horrific early-season funk he's in at the moment.
