Look, we don't want to go overboard with this. Not every race can be a gem. Sometimes you just have a flat-out domination, a race where one car so thoroughly outclasses the field that you know the only way he's going to get beaten is if he beats himself.
On Saturday night in Richmond, Kyle Busch didn't beat himself. And thus, he salted away his second win of the year, an effective and thorough demolition of the entire field. Busch was outstanding on restarts, mercury-smooth when running through the field, and a fading dot in the windshield when he had the lead.
Thanks to his run, Busch moved into third place in the standings, passing Dale Earnhardt Jr. and behind only Carl Edwards and Jimmie Johnson. And, based on everything we've seen this season, those three should be in the conversation right on into the Chase.
This marked the third straight spring Richmond race Busch has won, and his only real competition all night was Denny Hamlin, who's won the last two fall races. Hamlin was riding a two-race weekend win streak, taking both the Nationwide and charity races, but even he was no match for Busch. This also marked Busch's 21st Cup win, tying him with names such as Benny Parsons, Bobby Labonte and Jeff Burton.
While other races this year have had long stretches of ridearounds, this one lacked the great finish to leave on a high note. Still, for Busch and Hamlin, it worked out just fine. For Jeff Gordon (wrecked out), Kurt Busch (running terribly) and others, the climb up the Chase hill remains a steep one.
