Ford suing Ferrari over usage of F150

Ferrari's new Formula 1 car is the F150.

No, it's not the Ford truck with a Ferrari logo on it. The downforce and mechanical grip in the corners probably isn't sufficient.

Naturally, Ford isn't too happy with Ferrari's name choice, so it filed suit on Wednesday against Ferrari.

Ferrari's F150 logo bears striking resemblance to the one on Ford's F-150 pickup truck, the top-selling vehicle in the United States, Ford said in a complaint filed in federal court.

"Ferrari has misappropriated the F-150 trademark in naming its new racing vehicle the 'F150' in order to capitalize on and profit from the substantial goodwill that Ford has developed in the F-150 trademark," Ford said in a complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Detroit.

Ford is asking the court to bar Ferrari from using the name. The automaker is also seeking unspecified damages, including damages of $100,000 under the Anticybersquatting Consumer Protection Act.

Ferrari is owned 85 percent by Fiat, which also has management control and owns 25 percent of Chrysler. That may help explain the goodwill statement in the lawsuit because the only Formula 1 race in North America is north of the border.

We'll see what happens with this one, though the only logical solution would be for Ferrari to join NASCAR and woo Jack Roush from the Ford camp. Hey, anything's possible, right?
