We've been going on for quite some time about how Tiger Woods hasn't won a tournament since 2009, and how oh so horrible it is that his winless streak is into its second year. But there's another multiple-major winner out there who just snapped a winless streak that makes Tiger's look like a weekend vacation.
Sandy Lyle, winner of both the British Open and the Masters, last won a tournament prior to this weekend in November 1992. That's more than 18 years. For perspective, Woods would have to go winless until 2027 to match that. (Sean Foley probably would be fired by then.)
But enough about Woods. Let's focus on Sandy and his achievement. He won the inaugural PGA European Senior Tour's ISPS Handa Senior World Championship (man, that's a mouthful) at Mission Hills, China's World Cup Course.
"You wonder after about four or five years whether you’ll ever win again let alone nearly 20, so this is very special," Lyle said. "I joined the Senior Tour, and it didn’t happen as quickly as I expected it to so you do have doubts. My trophy cabinet has been gathering dust over the years so I feel relieved to get a win, and it’s even better that it’s here in China on this course. This answers a lot of questions I had about myself."
Lyle finished at -12, three strokes ahead of Peter Fowler. A convincing win, that, and who cares if it wasn't at one of golf's storied courses? Good on ya, Sandy.
Oh, and here's a bit of info on what many of today's top golfers were doing around the time of Lyle's last win:
• Phil Mickelson had just turned pro.
• Tiger Woods, age 12, competed in his first PGA Tour event.
• John Daly was little more than a year removed from his landmark PGA Championship win.
• The four major champions that year were Fred Couples, Tom Kite, Nick Faldo and Nick Price.
• Ryo Ishikawa was one year old.
So, yes, welcome back to the winner's circle, Sandy. Don't take another two decades to return.
