Before we plunge headlong into the third day of baseball's winter meetings, let's take a look at some of the things that got done in the last 24 hours ...
• Carlos Pena agrees to deal with the Chicago Cubs: On a day when the crosstown White Sox losing their grip on their old first baseman previously qualified as an uneventful day's biggest news, the Cubs made a late move to sign the Tampa Bay Rays' old first baseman to a one-year deal worth a reported $10 million. That's a lotta cheese for someone who hit .196 in 2010 and had an OPS of .732. I can't imagine it'll be long before he's being booed by the Wrigley Field faithful.
On the bright side, the contract is only for one year (is Pena a placeholder for Albert Pujols or Prince Fielder?) and the Cubs bulding on their league lead in players named Carlos with four (Pena, Marmol, Silva and Zambrano).
• Michael Young isn't heading to the Colorado Rockies right now: Tuesday's other late-night needle movers were the rumors that the Texas Rangers would be trading their face of the franchise to the Rockies — where he'd play second base — before using the salary savings to make a run at Adrian Beltre. Ken Rosenthal, however, reports that the speculation may not have lasted the night and the Rangers have now supposedly told Young that he's not going anywhere. Considering that Young is due a total of $48 million over the next three seasons, I think it'd be foolish for the Rangers not to get a little more flexible by cutting some of their top salary, especially if it means more money for a winning bid on Cliff Lee.
• Ty Wigginton commits to the Colorado Rockies for two seasons: Eight million smacks got Rox GM Dan O'Dowd the chance to see if a move out of the AL East — and into Coors Field — can boost Wigginton's offense any.
• J.J. Putz signs a two-year deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks: It might not sell a lot of season ticket packages, but the D'Backs are quietly putting together a solid bullpen after last year's atrocities.
• Matt Diaz gets a two-year deal with the Pittsburgh Pirates: Only days after being non-tendered by the Atlanta Braves, Diaz earns some security in Pittsburgh. Hey, it's a paycheck!
• Murray Chass is a blogger, while Luke Scott is a birther: Dirty words for $200, Alex.
