Video: Tebow scores on first possession, throws TD on second

It wasn't quite walking on water, but for Tim Tebow fans it might as well have been. In his first NFL start, the former University of Florida football hero scored on a bruising 40-yard touchdown run and then threw a deep touchdown pass on his very next offensive snap.

You can watch the run below:

Tebow was unsuccessful in turning water into Gatorade after the plays.

Look, the former Heisman Trophy winner is never going to be Peyton Manning or Tom Brady or Michael Vick, but despite what his vocal critics say, he can play in the NFL. Though he didn't win his NFL starting debut (his Denver Broncos were beaten by the Oakland Raiders, 39-23), Tebow showed he can be a capable NFL quarterback given the right situation.

He finished the game 8-for-16 passing for 138 yards and a touchdown and also ran eight times for 78 yards and a score. It wasn't his fault (or entirely his fault) that the team's other running backs carried 25 times for 28 yards or that the Denver defense couldn't stop Oakland.

The increase of statistical analysis in baseball has led to the diminishing of such so-called intangible assets as "clutch" and "winners." Derek Jeter may have the reputation as coming through when it matters, but the stats don't support the notion. Football is different, though. There are playmakers and guys who can get it done in crunchtime. It's way too early to say that Tim Tebow is either one of those guys, but after his plays Sunday, it can't be ruled out either.
