If Mat Latos' handwritten volley is any indication, the Colorado Rockies aren't the only ones trying to build on a feud with the San Francisco Giants in the NL West.
The young San Diego Padres pitcher recently signed three baseballs for American Icon Autographs with the inscription of "I hate SF!" They're now being featured on an eBay listing with a buy-it-now price of $299.99 and a note that 50 percent of the proceeds will go to the MLB Players Alumni Association.
Padres fans have to like seeing the fire still burning in Latos after their team was bounced from playoff contention by the Giants on the last weekend of the season. For one, the implied aggression beats the busted sunroof trouble that Latos found with SF announcer Dave Flemming last year. For another, it's not as if he hasn't backed up his talk in the past. Latos was 2-2 with a 2.37 ERA and 0.92 WHIP in six starts against the Giants in 2010. Pads fans are hoping he brings that dislike to the mound each time he faces San Francisco in 2011.
But just like 22 Gigantes was annoyed at the suggestion of a rivalry with Colorado, Splashing Pumpkins is irked with Latos' language on the baseball.
I'd suggest that being the target of everyone's ire is part of being the champ and that Latos message is ultimately harmless and maybe even fun.
Try and enjoy the position while you're in it, San Francisco fans.
