So in an attempt to inject a bit more life and interest into these early season tournaments, and because we're both inveterate gamblers who are one bad card from being out on the streets, Jay Busbee and I are playing a golf version of a football suicide pool: We each pick one golfer per tournament and see how they do against each other, straight up. Victory over the other guy gets one point, victory in the tournament gets three points. And when we burn a golfer, he's done for the year. This week: the Valero Texas Open, where one of these two will hopefully be boot scooting to a victory.
Busbee: Adam Scott. He's handsome, rich and still better at golf than I'll ever be, which is reason enough to hate him. Plus he uses a long putter, which is just silly. Still, he's playing some fine golf right now, and you ride the hot streak till it cools. Let's just hope it doesn't cool Thursday. Scott to keep the streak alive!
Bacon: You take one hot golfer, I'll take the other. Scott played great golf, I'll give him that, but Cabrera, a former Masters champion, had a really good bounce-back tournament and showed signs of emerging from injury. I like him this week in Texas, which is closer to his home country than Augusta. Geography is great reasoning!!
Last Week: Busbee's pick of Phil Mickelson was good enough to overtake Anthony Kim, who didn't even make the weekend. Lefty finished t-27 at 1-under, while Kim missed the cut at 2-over. It was a big week, as the majors count for two points, giving Busbee the edge again.
Overall Record: Busbee 9, Bacon 8
