Sure, he's the 2011 Masters champion, and he did it in incredible fashion with four birdies over his last four holes, but do you really know the guy? Here are some things about Charl that might help you get to know our newest major champion a little better.
-- He's only 26, and his win at the Masters was his first victory in any PGA Tour event. Before that, his best finish on the PGA Tour was second place at the WGC-CA Championship a year ago, won by Ernie Els.
-- Born in Vereeniging, South Africa, Schwartzel got his professional chops on the Sunshine Tour, winning the money title (or Order of Merit over there) three times from 2005-2007.
-- His favorite food is filet steak, though you could hardly tell from his 140-pound stature.
-- Charl has won six European Tour titles since 2004, including the Dunhill Championship and the Madrid Masters.
-- In 2010, Schwartzel finished in the top 20 at the U.S. Open, British Open and PGA Championship, so to say this was a complete surprise would be incorrect.
-- Claims his idol is Angus Buchan, a farmer "who gave his life to God."
-- Joins Trevor Immelman and Gary Player as South African winners of the Masters.
-- The Masters win jumped Schwartzel to 11th in the World Golf Rankings, but he was only 29th before that, an extremely respectable number for a young player like Charl.
