Former Gonzaga starting point guard Demetri Goodson has transferred to Baylor -- to play football.
"(I'm) excited. A bit nervous because I haven't played (football) in a while. Once I go and start hitting the weights and learning their system, I'll be alright."
Goodson, the brother of former Texas A&M running back and current Carolina Panther Mike Goodson, announced earlier this month that he was trading his high tops for football cleats and that he wanted to play closer to his hometown in Texas.
Initial reports suggested he would follow his brother's footsteps and play at A&M or even for former A&M coach Dennis Franchione at Texas State, but chose Baylor because the Bears wanted him for football from the beginning.
Goodson hasn't played football since his sophomore year in high school when he was the starting cornerback at Klein (Texas) Collins High School, but he noted that he's already bigger -- at 6-foot, 175 pounds -- than either of the Bears starting corners, which could give him an advantage.
So why did Goodson make the switch? It was all about his future, he said.
Goodson, who started 68 of 69 games for the Zags in the past two seasons, said he wasn't sure he'd have a professional career in basketball and that football offered more opportunity.
"I could probably go overseas and make some money," Goodson told the station. "But professionally football will be a better move for me just because of the number of basketball players who make it and the number of football players.
"That was basically why I did it."
Goodson will have two years of eligibility at Baylor.
