TSN is reporting that the NHL will have a discussion with Alex Burrows of the Vancouver Canucks about his diet sometime on Thursday, after he snacked on Patrice Bergeron's finger at the end of the first period in Game 1 the Stanley Cup Final on Wednesday night.
It will likely not be a formal disciplinary hearing, and a decision on whether to pursue any further action will be made at that time. The incident occurred during a scrum at the end of the first period. While a linesman was trying to break up some pushing and shoving, Bergeron's hand ended up near Burrows' face and the Canucks' forward appeared to bite down on a finger of Bergeron's glove.
In case you missed it, here's what Patrice Bergeron said about the bite via WEEI:
"He cut me a little bit on my finger, but I'm not going to complain about it. I'll let the league do their job, but he sure did [bite me]."
Bergeron and Burrows were each given roughing penalties for their tussle at the end of the period, though Bergeron's was a minor and Burrows' was a double-minor. Bergeron wanted further action to be taken against Burrows, though the refs did not see the play. Bergeron was uncharacteristically irate following the play.
"They didn't see it, but we were speaking French and I [asked Burrows] why did he do that," Bergeron said. "That lineseman speaks French, and he said that [Burrows'] explanation was that he put my finger in his mouth and he had to do it."
Via the Province, here's what Alex Burrows had to say:
"We were battling and obviously had a little exchange there," said Burrows, who has 7-7-14 in 19 playoff games. "I'm not going to say too much about it. Obviously, I got four minutes on the play and we killed it off and our guys did a good job killing it off."
Did he bite the Bruins player? "I don't think so," said Burrows. "He had his fingers in my mouth, but I don't think I bit him. He put his hand up and put it in my face and his fingers in my mouth and that's what happened."
Remember, this is Mike Murphy's call, as he's at the helm of supplemental discipline with Colin Campbell (allegedly) not involved due to his son's place on the Boston Bruins' roster.
