1. Giants still boss: Tim Lincecum took a no-hitter into the seventh (or, as no-hitters should be called at Coors Field, a No-Mo) and the San Francisco Giants beat the Colorado Rockies 8-1 in an early season NL West showdown. Slugger Carlos Gonzalez broke it up with a single.
Timmy struck out 10 to tie a franchise record with Hall of Famer Christy Mathewson (he's old) for 28 such games with double-digit Ks. Said one opponent of Timmy:
"He's always good, but tonight was some of his best stuff that I've seen," Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki said.
And nobody on the Giants made a peep about the Coors humidor, either.
2. Gold, Jerry, Gold! Oh, they already love Jerry Sands at Dodger Stadium. He went 1 for 3 with an RBI double in his major league debut, a 4-2 victory against the Braves. Ted Lilly outpitched Tim Hudson, too, but who cares? Jerry Sands is here!
3. Dice, Dice baby: Daisuke Matsuzaka was brilliant ? one hit and one walk allowed over seven shutout innings ? in Boston's 9-1 victory against Toronto. Who knew vintage Dice-K was still attainable? Only if John Farrell is watching, I guess. Red Sox only five under .500.
4. Zen-brano: It's been many tantrums and destroyed Gatorade dispensers since Carlos Zambrano was this good: No runs, three hits, one walk and 10 strikeouts over eight innings. And the Cubs beat the Padres, 1-0 in 10 innings, on Tyler Colvin's pinch-hit double.
5. Down is the new up: Thanks to a three-run 10th inning sparked by Shelley Duncan's RBI double, the juggernaut Cleveland Indians now lead the AL Central by two games over the Royals. The Tribe won 7-3 and now have the best record in the majors at 12-4, along with Denver.
6. We know where you live, Kendrick! After the Phillies rallied to tie the score in the ninth against John Axford's Mustache, right-hander Kyle Kendrick purposely ruined the game by allowing the Brewers to score three runs in the 12th inning. Milwaukee won 6-3.
7. Hoist the Jolly Roger again: The Pirates won another road series, taking three of four thanks to a 9-3 victory at Cincinnati. Kevin Correia earned the complete game, too: He had to face Aroldis Chapman throwing 102-103 mph in the ninth inning to get it.
And ... something about Mike Leake and some T-shirts at Macy's. Can't believe everything you read.
8. That's how Nick Punto would have done it: A pinch-hit homer for Luke Scott is a pinch-hit homer for freedom, but it wasn't a big enough cap popped into Matt Capps, and so the Minnesota Twins hung on for a 5-3 victory against the Orioles. Francisco Liriano pitched to contact, too, just like he was told. It was good enough.
9. Didn't mess with Texas enough: The Angels sauntered into Texas all 10-5 and in first place, until C.J. Wilson wagged his finger no at them in a 7-1 Rangers romp.
