Dave Wannstedt has suddenly become a hot coaching commodity

Dave Wannstedt, best known as a former head coach of the Chicago Bears, Miami Dolphins and the University of Pittsburgh, as well as the owner of the NFL's seventh greatest mustache ever, is in high demand for a number of coaching positions.

That's the word from ESPN's Chris Mortensen and Adam Schefter. Wanny is reportedly wanted in San Diego, Carolina, Cleveland and Buffalo. Presumably, these teams would want him as a defensive coordinator, a position he held under Jimmy Johnson with the Dallas Cowboys from '89 - '92. Schefter and Mort say that Wannstedt also wants to be an assistant head coach, which he was under Johnson in 1999 in Miami.

Why is everyone jonesing for the Wannstache? Let's take a look back at his NFL body of work.

In his four years as defensive coordinator for the Cowboys, Wannstedt's defenses went from 20th to 10th to 17th to 1st in the league in yards allowed. Maybe his name isn't the first you think of when those Super Bowl-winning Cowboys teams are mentioned, but Wannstedt does have a ring. Norv Turner, who wants Wanny to replace Ron Rivera as defensive coordinator in San Diego, was the offensive coordinator for a couple of years alongside Wanny.

As head coach in Chicago, Wannstedt's defenses were unremarkable -- not great, not terrible -- and spent five of his six years there ranked in the teens.

When he got to Miami, the defense became as formidable as his mouth brow. In all five of his years as head coach, his defense was ranked in the top ten in the league in yardage allowed, even in 2004, where he opened the season 1-8 and lost his job.

In the previous four years, Wanny was actually a pretty successful head coach, posting records of 11-5, 11-5, 9-7, and 10-6. That's 41-23 before he resigned nine games into the 2004 season.

Expect him to land on an NFL coaching staff sometime in the next couple of days.
