Should this ridiculous lockout come to fruition, there's at least one NFL rookie who won't have to worry about putting food on the table.
Under Armour has signed former Auburn quarterback Cam Newton to an endorsement contract, one that Darren Rovell of CNBC reports is "the largest deal ever given to an incoming NFL rookie." Specific terms aren't available, but the biggest deal prior to this one was given to Reggie Bush in 2006 and paid him over $1 million per year.
Say what you want about Cam Newton, but no one can ever question his ability to generate income before he actually plays football.
If it feels like you've seen an Under Armour logo on Newton before, it's because you have. Lots and lots of times. Quoth Rovell:
The signing provides great consistency to Under Armour. Thanks to its deal with Auburn, and the school's national championship this season, Newton arguably became the most identifiable athlete of the brand in the company's 15-year history. He typically wore 17 Under Armour logos each Saturday during the season.
Holy thunder. Seventeen Under Armour logos on his person, all at the same time? I'm not even sure how you do that. Does Under Armour make ascots and dickies that can be worn superfluously under a football uniform? Did he have Under Armour fillings?
It might be a bit of a gamble for the company, as Newton, in most mock drafts at the moment, isn't a top-10 pick or even the top quarterback prospect. But at the same time, not many of the top prospects in this year's draft class play at the marketable skill positions, and Newton, if nothing else, is going to be highly visible.
The draft is set for April 28.
