All-Star events also include chain gang with illegal immigrants

Dust storms! Immigration law protestors!Gold baseballs! Heat!

If those unusual All-Star game features weren't enough, check out this news: Joe Arpaio, the grandstanding and controversial sheriff of Maricopa County, plans to show up at Chase Field with a chain gang that will pick up trash around the park next week.

Who we talking here? Pete Rose? Denny McLain? Barry Bonds or Roger Clemens?

Nope, just a group of convicted DUI offenders who have volunteered for the duty. The chain gang will include some undocumented immigrants who also made the incredibly stupid decision of having too much to drink before getting behind the wheel.

From the Arizona Republic:

A group of inmates from the sheriff's holding area for undocumented immigrants, all of whom were convicted of DUI, will join American male and female chains of DUI offenders to send a message about the perils of drunken driving when they pick up trash outside Chase Field next week, Arpaio said.If someone draws another message about the legal pitfalls of undocumented immigration, all the better.

"I would be discriminating against the people here illegally in this country who have been convicted of the same crimes U.S. citizens have been convicted of. Should I say, 'Oh no, you can't be in a chain gang because you're from a different country'? " Arpaio said Wednesday. "Everything I do, there's a method, whether on punishment or deterrent."

Arpaio staged a similar stunt during Super Bowl week a few years back and I can't argue with the actual shaming. If it causes one less person to put the lives of others in danger, then it's a worthwhile exercise in teaching the consequences of driving drunk.

As for commenting on Arpaio's method of using the hot-button topic of illegal immigrants to draw more attention to his fight against DUIs, well, I'm just going to take cover over here and listen to Sam Cooke instead ...
