Venable's wave-and-miss in the 14th inning Wednesday night was no ordinary K. As the 36th strikeout of night, it set a modern record for most in a game of 14 innings or shorter, and is the most since 1900. That's 111 years ago! The old record of 35 was set by the Angels and Rangers in a 13-inning game in 2007.

All allusions to electric fans aside, Padres batters whiffed 19 times and it might have been more, if not for the Giants' Nate Schierholtz ending the game with a home run in the bottom of the 14th. (And he struck out only once in six at-bats.)
Neither starting pitcher reached double figures in Ks, but the Giants bullpen did, with Ramon Ramirez, Guillermo Mota, Brian Wilson, Sergio Romo and Lopez combining to strike out 13 batters.
Padres right-hander Dustin Moseley struck out a career-high nine while the Giants collectively managed just one walk (the Padres coaxed three).
The worst individual batting offenders: On the Padres' side, Chris Denorfia and Rob Johnson each pulled a hat trick with three apiece. For the Giants, Aubrey Huff and Andres Torres also struck out three times each.
No Golden Sombreros for anyone, then. It's more democratic that way.
