New Batmobile has Formula 1 connections, neon wheels

For a guy who likes to work in the shadows, Batman sure tools around Gotham City in some splashy rides.

Behold the new Batmobile, which will debut this summer in "Batman Live," a European stage production. (A stage play based on a comic book character? What could possibly go wrong?) While most Batmobiles were designed by comic-book artists and hence may not be the most aerodynamically sound creations, this one is the product of former Formula 1 designer Gordon Murray. It does feature the classic F1 lines, though changing out those tires on pit stops would be brutal.

The new Batmobile features hydrogen fuel cells (the Dark Knight goes green!), "virtual wheels" (...all right, nice idea) and lasers (should be mandatory on all race cars). Here, behold the unveiling:

Hmm. I'm not sure that's going to pass any inspections. Anyway, if you want to see the Batmobile in action, catch the "Batman Live world arena tour" throughout the United Kingdom this summer ... and presumably elsewhere, if all goes well.

Oh, and for those of you interested in the legacy of the Batmobile, check out this unbelievably exhaustive graphic below of every single Batmobile ever made ... well, except for the one above, of course. How exactly does Bruce Wayne maintain his secret identity when he keeps ordering cars shaped like bats?
