Hawaii wants to bring LPGA in for champions-only event

One of the perks of winning on the PGA and Champions tours is a trip to Hawaii to start the next season. Nice deal, eh?

Now Hawaii golf types are looking to let the ladies in on the action. As the AP notes, they're hoping to start a third season-kickoff, all-champions event for the LPGA. Plenty of time on the schedule, after all.

Mark Rolfing, commentator, Devil Ball podcast guest and Hawaii golf aficionado, is seeking to strike an agreement to bring the LPGA back to Hawaii, with the hope that it could be another best-of-the-best event.

Of course, the flip side of this is that no matter who's playing in Hawaii, viewers aren't paying much attention. As we've discussed in this space before, Hawaii early season golf doesn't have the cachet of later events.

Also complicating matters: the LPGA's lawsuit against Kapalua. The resort had agreed to a five-year tournament but bailed after one because of -- here's a surprise -- a lack of sponsorship.

Then again, let's not go all negative here. There's more than one golf course in Hawaii, after all. And any effort that gets the LPGA another tournament is a worthwhile endeavor.
