Suicide showdown, Week 1: Ernie Els vs. Bubba Watson

So in an attempt to inject a bit more life and interest into these early season tournaments, and because we're both inveterate gamblers who are one bad card from being out on the streets, Shane Bacon and I are playing a golf version of a football suicide pool: We each pick one golfer per tournament and see how they do against each other, straight up. And when we burn a golfer, he's done. Follow along and place your bets!

Busbee, Ernie Els: In an event where everyone's a former champion, it makes sense to pick one of the champion-est of champions, right? When you're talking Els, who had a career resurgence in 2010, it makes plenty of sense. He's got a victory here in 2003, and he's got the kind of familiarity with the course that could frustrate more heralded international golfers like Ian Poulter and Graeme McDowell. I'm burning my Easy pick right off the tee. Bring it home, Ernie!

Bacon, Bubba Watson You take Ernie, I'll gladly take Bubba Watson, the long-hitting lefty who doesn't mind hitting a high fade on a course where distance is key. Bubba broke through a season ago, and looks like he's in position to do more of the same, and if an emotional player like Watson wants to get it off right, he best win early. I like Bubba at Kapalua ... call me a lefty homer?

D'oh! So there you have it. Updated stats next week.

Last week: N/A. It's the first week of the season.

Overall record: See above.
