Tom Zbikowski puts boxing on the back burner

Ravens safety Tom Zbikowski, one of the guys smart enough to actually get paid to fight people during the lockout (not everyone is, you know), is putting his boxing career on the shelf for now. He's switching himself back into football mode.

"It was time to start the transition back to football," Zbikowski told the Los Angeles Times in a text message. "My teammates are starting to organize some workouts, so it's just time to head back (to Baltimore). Wish I had more time to do both."

It's funny he should say that, because the owners and the players have seemingly been crafting the perfect scenario to allow players the time to do something outside of football. I guess Tom Zbikowski has more faith than I do that the 2011 NFL season will start on time. My confidence in common sense winning out wanes a bit every day.

Skeptics might raise the possibility that Zbikowski is leaving boxing for drug-related reasons. After his last fight, he tested positive for THC, even though the suspension was lifted when he tested clean at a second test. His promoter, Bob Arum, says the drug issue has nothing to do with Zibby's decision to concentrate on football.

He's definitely not quitting because he wasn't good enough. His professional record was 4-0, with three of those wins coming since March.
